Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce

>> Greetings from the Chamber

It is not hard to find descriptive words such as "quality of life", "sense of place" or "beautiful and unique" when reading any Mountain Brook publication.  Often mentioned is the "dream realized".  The dream of Robert Jemison in creating such a community in the 1920s is what our city is today.  We invite you to explore the chanmber web site and get a sense of what makes Mountain Brook such an ideal community.  Featured on this site are our nationally recognized school system, our library, our businesses giving back to the community, our strong housing market, our city government, fire and police protection and our people.  Each component contributes to what makes Mountain Brook a special place.

Mountain Brook is made up of five commercial villages in and around our neighborhoods and schools. Incorporated among them are walking trails, sidewalks and beautiful homes and landscapes.  Our stores have served multiple generations with specialized goods and friendly service. Business owners are residents and people committed to Mountain Brook.

The role of the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce is to provide an environment to help our members prosper and succeed through a proactive working partnership with the business community, city government and the community at large.  Our organization is made up of business owners, residents and government officials all working together for the betterment of the community. We continue to explore ways to enhance your experiences with our merchants with proactive communication with our members, events and individual feedback.  Our Village Gold gift certificates continue to be successful for our business members and a convenience for individuals searching for the perfect gift idea.  Whether you are a longtime resident of Mountain Brook or just passing through, we invite you to make the most of your experience here.  Stroll through our commercial villages, run on our trails and sit a while in our restaurants. Find out for yourself what makes Mountain Brook beautiful and unique and discover your own sense of place.

>> About The City of Mountain Brook

The City of Mountain Brook was incorporated in 1942 and was the first city in Alabama to operate under the Council - Manager form of government. The Mayor serves as the policy head of the City and the City Council serves as the legislative body for the community. The Mayor and the five Council members are elected at-large for four-year terms as the governing authority for the City. The governing authority adopts ordinances, rules and regulations regarding commercial and personal conduct within the City and analyzes presentand future community needs.

In addition to its community-wide policy level duties, the City Council oversees the daily operation of the City government. They accomplish this through an appointed City Manager and department heads who supervise administrative, public safety, and public health activities. The City Council encourages citizens to attend its regular public meetings held at City Hall on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7:30 p.m.

The City Manager is responsible for the overall operation and supervision of the governmental functions in the City. The City Manager receives policy directives from the Mayor and City Council. As the administrative head of the City, the City Manager is responsible for the appointment and dismissal of all employees except the Fire Chief and Police Chief whom the City Council appoints. The City Manager presents the annual budget to the Mayor and the Council, including long-range goals for the operation and improvement of the City. The City Manager is also responsible for the management of the budget and long-range goals after adoption by the Council.

The Finance Department provides financial and administrative services including budget planning and administration, human resource services, payroll processing, accounting and record-keeping services, and revenue administration and collection functions.

The Inspections Department inspects new construction and renovations to ensure compliance with the Southern Standard Building Code. Every new building and renovations to existing buildings must be inspected to ensure they do not create dangerous living or business conditions.

>> Making a Difference for the Community

Since its incorporation in 1997, the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce has worked every day to serve the best interests of its members through planned programs, business recommendations, events, welcoming a new resident or business to town, or just helping to make the community an even better place to live and work. While the Chamber's primary mission is to foster business growth in Mountain Brook, the Chamber is also involved in the lives of residents and plays an active role in the community as a whole.

"The Chamber's mission is to provide an environment to help our members prosper and succeed through a proactive working partnership with the business community, city government and the community at large," says Alice Womack, a member of the Chamber's Board of Directors. "The Chamber has to be in tune with the pulse of the community in order to generate the support for the businesses."

Staying in tune with the "pulse of the community" translates into being involved in numerous activities, both highly visible and behind the scenes. "Some of the Chamber's most visible projects are the village events that we have created and manage," says Tricia Ford, executive director of the Chamber. "We raise awareness in the community with the ultimate goal of driving customer traffic and sales into our businesses. These events are held in our commercial areas during the summer and holidays and include Our Blooming Village, Father Christmas in English Village; Market Days and Santa Comes to the Village in Mountain Brook Village; and Dog Days and the Christmas Parade in Crestline Village."

This year, in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the Chamber and the 65th anniversary of the city, the Chamber of Commerce hosted its first-ever Red Carpet Events, in which local merchants in each village stayed open late and "rolled out the red carpet" for a special shopping experience. On October 25, the Hollywood-themed event took place in Mountain Brook Village, English Village and Mountain Brook Plaza, with "lights, glitz and glitter," and plenty of wine and cheese, Ford says. On October 11, Crestline Village's Red Carpet event included a street dance featuring The Ramblers Reunion band, and on November 1, Cahaba Village opened its doors for an after-hours wine stroll.
